Annual Water Disinfection Method Switch | Feb 27 - Apr 6

Town News Posted on February 23, 2026

From February 27th through April 6th, the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant will switch from chloramine disinfection to free chlorine disinfection. The Town conducts this process in conjunction with other communities in the area, as mandated by State and Federal regulatory agencies. As part of this process, the Town's entire water distribution system will be flushed by the Water Resources Department’s Operations Division. Some hydrant flushing activity may be performed at night. Crews will make every effort to avoid disturbing curbside solid waste collection.

Throughout this process, the water will remain safe to drink; however, some consumers may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor.

Customers that use tap water for kidney dialysis machines or fish aquariums should be aware that during this period the water may contain chloramine, chlorine, or a mixture of the two at the beginning and end of this period.

We encourage customers to check their water for discoloration before washing white clothing. If the water appears discolored, try flushing your household lines by running water through all household faucets for a few minutes. If flushing fails to clear the water, please contact Water Resources at (919) 362-8166 for further assistance.

Cary/Apex Water Treatment Plant updates their webpage annually to reflect current information.
