Leak Detection

When a water leak goes unnoticed, it can result in increased utility costs and property damage to your home. Common household leaks include worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and leaking valves. These are often easy to fix with basic tools and hardware.

Identifying a Leak

If you suspect a water leak in your home, take these steps before hiring a professional plumber.

Test for Toilet Leaks

  • Put several drops of food coloring or a dye tablet into the toilet tank.
  • Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes.
  • If color appears in the toilet bowl without flushing, the flapper or other tank components are leaking.

Inspect Fixtures and Appliances

  • Check under sinks: Look for pooling water, mold, or mineral deposits indicating a leak.
  • Inspect faucets, showerheads and hose bibs: Check the joints for drips.
  • Check washing machine and dishwasher: Look for leaks around seals and connections.
  • Inspect the refrigerator: Look for drips underneath it.

Look for Other Signs of Leaks

  • Water stains: Look for brown or dark water stains on walls, ceilings, or floors.
  • Musty odors: A musty smell often signals mold or mildew from hidden water damage.
  • Damp or wet spots: Feel for wet areas on floors, walls, or carpets.
  • Peeling paint or bubbling wallpaper: These are common signs of water seeping behind the surface.
  • Increased water bills: A sudden spike in your water bill can indicate a hidden leak.
  • Listen for sounds: Listen for the sound of running water from within walls or under floors.
  • Inspect the yard between the water meter box and your home: A soggy, damp or eroded area in the yard is a good indication of an underground leak.

When to Get Help

If you are unable to locate the source of the leak in your home, please contact the Town at (919) 249-3311 to request an inspection of your water meter box.

Residents are discouraged from inspecting the water meter box, as they could damage the water meter or transmitter if the lid is not handled properly during removal and replacement. Additionally, there is a potential for injury from insects and other vermin that are often found inside the water meter box.
