Public Works Household Recycling Materials

For items not listed below, check out the Wake County Trash Takers site. Trash Takers provides a fast and convenient way for residents and businesses to locate organizations that reuse, recycle or dispose of unwanted materials.

Corrugated Cardboard & Chipboard (cereal boxes, 12-pack drink cartons):
Accepted: Unwaxed corrugated (flat on outsides and wavy in middle)
Not Accepted:
No packing material, no styrofoam or plastics, no food on cardboard, no pizza boxes.
How to recycle cardboard/chipboard: All material must be removed from inside boxes. Remove excess tape and packing list. Cut or tear into pieces no larger than 2ft x 3ft. Stack FLATTENED cardboard under bin or in cart. Stacks must not be higher than 3 ft.

Junk Mail:
Accepted: General mail from solicitations
Not Accepted: Window envelopes, adhesives, stickers, plastic inserts.

Glass:
Accepted: All glass food and beverage containers; any color
Not Accepted: Plate glass, ceramic materials, or any glass that is not a food beverage container
How to recycle glass: Remove metal tops and rinse all containers. Paper labels do not need to be removed.

Aluminum, Tin & Steel Cans:
Accepted: Any aluminum beer or soft drink containers and steel/tin food cans
Not Accepted: Aluminum foil or pie plates, etc.
How to recycle aluminum: Empty, rinse and crush all cans

Newspapers and Magazines:
Accepted: Newspapers and all the inserts that come with it. Magazines with staple or glued bindings only. We now accept phone books.
Not Accepted: Books, office paper, tissue, or other paper products.
How to recycle newspapers: Place the newspapers on the top of the cans and glass in the recycling container. (Please cover with plastic if raining and please secure papers with cords on sides of bin)

Plastics:
Accepted: Plastics #1 through #5 that have a neck on the container.
Not Accepted: Any other plastic containers #6-#7 or that have contained anti-freeze, motor oil, or other hazardous waste
How to recycle plastics: Discard lid, rinse all containers and crush
