[ARCHIVED] Apex Announces Inaugural Sculpture Walk in Downtown Apex

Nine sculptures are on display throughout downtown Apex as the town kicks off an inaugural Apex Sculpture Walk. Presented and organized by the Apex Public Art Committee, sculptures were selected from over 35 submissions.

Apex Public Art Committee Chair, Tom Colwell, shares “Public art enriches the community and help us tap into our creative imaginations. We love hearing people discuss what the sculptures mean to them or simply seeing someone take a selfie with the artwork. The Apex Sculpture Walk adds to the vibrancy of our downtown, making it an even more desirable destination.”

While submissions came from all over the United States, selected artists all call North Carolina home - with the closest being Cary-based Phil Hathcock and furthest being Asheville-based Harry McDaniel. Artists installed their works during the week of April 12th , with sculptures starting at Hunter Street Park (1250 Ambergate Station) and ending at Saunders Street (in downtown Apex).

All sculptures are within walking distance of each other and span less than half a mile.

Sculpture Walk works include:

  • Nominare Valle by Kevin Eichner, Moncure
  • Ribbon Arch II by Jim Gallucci, Greensboro
  • Inky by Phil Hathcock, Cary
  • Angular Separation by Hanna Jubran, Grimesland
  • Lotus Blossom by Beau Lyday, Valdese
  • Humpty Dumpty by Harry McDaniel, Asheville
  • Uphill Battle by Ethan Morrow, Durham
  • Amitri Devi by Charles Pilkey, Mint Hill
  • Stand by Mike Roig, Carrboro

The sculptures will remain in place until March 2022. The public is invited to select their vote for a “People’s Choice Award” using the free destination app Otocast. Otocast also provides artist-narrated stories and additional details about each piece in the Walk.

The Sculpture Walk also includes Trajectory by Dan Kuehl, which is part of the Town of Apex’s permanent collection, acquired in 2019.

Mayor Jacques Gilbert adds, “The Apex Sculpture Walk is exactly the type of thing we love to see! It provides a safe and fun opportunity to get outside, interact with art and others around you, and offers residents and visitors alike a reason to stop along the Walk for a bite to eat or chance to step into one of our many downtown shops.”
