Your Yard Waste Service

Yard Waste collection is performed weekly by the Town of Apex Public Works & Transportation Department personnel for residential customers.

On occasion, weekly collection is not possible, due to these reasons:
  • Inclement weather (this includes periods of heavy rain)
  • Holidays (yard waste collection workers are town employees, and get 11 paid holidays)
  • High Demand (especially from Oct-Dec during peak leaf season)

3 Types of Trucks

visit your street on yard waste collection day

Truck Type What This Truck Collects Tips for Collection
Vacuum Truck
  • Leaves
  • Grass Clippings
  • Pine cones
  • Pine Straw
  • Weeds
  • Small Shrubbery Clippings
  • Do not bag yard waste. Please place curbside
  • Place yard waste 10 feet away from storm drains
  • Dirt, sod, and rocks are not accepted items for yard waste collection
  • Separate this pile from any sticks/limbs, as those items can damage the vacuum tube
Chipper Truck
  • Sticks and Limbs
  • Christmas Trees (remove all lights and decorations)
  • Limbs must be no more than 8 feet long, and a maximum diameter of 8 inches
  • Logs, stumps and roots will not fit through the chipper and should be placed at the curb in a different pile. These items are collected separately.
Grapple Truck
  • Large limbs
  • Logs, stumps and roots that are too large for the chipper truck
  • If you see the chipper truck pass your large pile of limbs, it's very likely that the grapple truck has been notified, and will collect that pile by the end of the day.

Composting

In an effort to divert inappropriate materials from Wake County landfills, the Town of Apex is encouraging the use of compost bins to help residents dispose of yard waste. Compost bins are available at the Public Works Department during normal business hours. Cash or check will be accepted for payment. Rain barrels are also offered.
