Yard Waste Collection

Yard Waste collection is performed weekly by the Town of Apex Public Works Department for residential customers. For more information, see the full route schedule or view the Yard Waste Brochure (PDF).

Please Note: During peak leaf season, it can be difficult for town yard waste collection crews to maintain the scheduled weekly yard waste routes. Therefore, during the months of November, December and January when demand is high for this service, please note that your weekly collection may sometimes be delayed.

Incorrect Placement of Yard Waste

Yard Waste Details

  • Be sure to keep yard waste for collection out of the road and away from storm drains, ditches, and streams to prevent flooding.
  • Do not place yard waste in bags or your trash cart.
  • Keep large sticks and branches separate from smaller yard waste as this could damage the vacuum and delay collection.
  • Per ordinance, yard waste must be placed 10 feet or more away from storm drains.
  • Rake all yard waste to the curb to be vacuumed.

Leaves & Grass Clippings

Grass clipping collection includes:
  • Garden waste
  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Pine cones
  • Pine straw
  • Small shrubbery clippings
  • Straw
  • Weeds

Leaves and grass clippings will be collected curbside year-round by vacuum trucks. The town will be continuously swept, but during peak collection time, collection may not occur on a weekly basis. After peak collection time, yard waste should be collected in each neighborhood on a weekly basis.

Materials to Remove

Please rake leaves and grass clippings to curb for collection, taking special care not to mix the piles with:
  • Dirt/sod
  • Rocks
  • Sticks
The town does not pick up sod, rocks or dirt. These materials will have to be disposed of by the resident. Do not bag any leaves or yard waste.

Limb Chipping

  • Limbs are chipped curbside year-round and should be placed curbside for collection according to route schedule. Limbs do not need to be bundled or bagged.
  • Limbs to be chipped are to be no more than 8 feet long and a minimum of 3 feet long. Maximum diameter should be no more than 8 inches.
  • Logs, stumps, and roots will not fit through the chipper and should be placed at the curb separate from the limbs to be chipped. These items will be collected separately.

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees are collected and chipped curbside as part of the Town of Apex’s regular chipping routes. Remove all decorations from tree, including any nails from the stand, and place at curb for pickup.

In an effort to divert inappropriate materials from Wake County landfills, the Town of Apex is encouraging the use of compost bins to help residents dispose of yard waste. Compost bins are available at the Public Works Department during normal business hours. Cash or check will be accepted for payment. Rain barrels are also offered.
